GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A tanker truck burned for several hours after crashing on US-131, filling the downtown Grand Rapids sky with black smoke. The tanker truck crashed on southbound US-131 at I-196 near Exit 86A just after 8 a.m. Saturday, the Grand Rapids Police Department told News 8. No injuries were reported. As of 1 p.m., the freeway remains shutdown in both directions from Leonard Street NE to Pearl Street as the “fully engulfed” tanker continues to burn. Drivers should expect “lengthy closures” while first responders work to clear the roadway, the GRPD said in a release. ReportIt: Send us your photos Several eyewitness photos and videos showed a ball of fire and thick black smoke rising near the still-under construction Amway Stadium. The fire burned for several hours Saturday morning before crews managed to get the flames under control. By early afternoon, crews were working to remove the charred remains of the truck from the bridge. MDOT said they expect inspectors and engineers to evaluate the bridge sometime Saturday. The cause of the crash and fire remains under investigation. Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
