Artemis II Crew Farts Are a ‘Problem’ for the Spacecraft, Expert Says

On Monday, CTV News interviewed science and technology expert Dan Riskin about NASA’s Artemis II mission and its operational challenges. Riskin addressed the early bathroom issue, current waste management procedures, and why flatulence poses a flammability concern aboard NASA’s Artemis II lunar flyby. He noted methane and hydrogen in gas are flammable and described how meal planning aims to reduce flatulence. Solid waste is stored for return to Earth, while liquid waste is released into space. Riskin also discussed cabin size—about two minivans—and how microgravity makes the space feel roomier. The mission is planned for 10 days, shorter than the spacecraft’s month-long design, with a cooperative crew gathering observations on odors.
