What began as a wholesome love story rooted in faith spiraled into a nightmare no one saw coming. In a chilling episode of the ABC docudrama Betrayal: Secrets & Lies, viewers are taken inside the life of Donielle Showvay, who believed she had built a picture-perfect family with husband Chad Schipper until his shocking arrest exposed a secret life of deception and crime. The third episode, titled “The Bible Study Kidnapper” details how Showvay met Schipper at a Bible study group, where he had a reputation for being “very smart, very kind,” according to a story published by People on Tuesday, April 14. The two married and raised six children together, creating what seemed like an idyllic life. But cracks began to form early. Schipper admitted to a sexual encounter with a man outside their marriage, and while a marriage counselor encouraged Showvay to leave, she stayed, determined to make it work, per People. As the years passed, Schipper grew increasingly distant, spending long nights away from the family, often sleeping in his downstairs office, under the guise of work. Then came the night that changed everything. The outlet reported that in 2017, police stormed the family home after a violent crime unraveled. Schipper had broken into the home of an elderly couple, Larry and Connie Van Oosten, using a sledgehammer, taser, duct tape, and handcuffs. He allegedly kidnapped them and forced Connie to withdraw $350,000 from a bank, threatening her husband’s life. Authorities later discovered the couple held captive in a secret, hidden, soundproof cellar in a home that Schipper owned. “We’ve dealt with a lot of violent crime, but this one was bizarre,” retired Illinois State Police captain Chris Endress said, as detailed in People. “It was almost like an episode of Criminal Minds.” Schipper eventually confessed, admitting he “felt desperate” as financial troubles mounted. He was sentenced to 60 years in prison. However, for Showvay, the betrayal cut deeper than the crime itself. “I had a really hard time figuring out what reality was as opposed to what I thought reality was,” she admitted, per People. Now remarried to her very first sweetheart, Billy, and rebuilding her life, Showvay’s story serves as a haunting reminder: sometimes the most terrifying secrets are hiding in plain sight.
