Duck hidden in leaves becomes trapped after Mass. resident starts brush fire

A Wrentham resident started a brush fire at their home Tuesday morning, unknowingly trapping a duck that was hidden in a nearby leaf pile. The duck suffered severe burns before the resident noticed the injured bird and called animal control, Wrentham Animal Control wrote in a Facebook post. Nature’s Nurse Wildlife Rehabilitation in Medway provided emergency oxygen for the duck as Animal Control Officer Lexi Klenk rushed the bird to Newhouse Wildlife Rescue in Chelmsford for treatment. "All of her feathers are singed or burned completely off, and she is dealing with some serious burns to her skin and feet as well,“ the rescue wrote in a Facebook post. ”We are working hard to manage her pain and help her pull through this incredibly heartbreaking ordeal." It is unclear what condition the duck is in as of Wednesday evening. The duck was likely nesting in a leaf pile when the fire was started, obscuring it from the resident’s view, Wrentham Animal Control said. “This serves as an important reminder: if you are planning any type of brush or bonfire, please take the time to thoroughly check the area — especially under leaves or debris — before lighting. Wildlife often nest in these spots, and incidents like this can happen very quickly," the department wrote.
