Rapper M.I.A. has been fired from a tour with Kid Cudi after going on an anti-immigrant rant while opening a concert in Dallas over the weekend. During the show, the “Paper Planes” singer was met with a chorus of boos when she told audiences she couldn’t play her 2010 song “ILLYGIRL,” sometimes referred to as “Illegal,” before adding “though some of you could be in the audience.” She also complained about being “canceled for many reasons” but said she “never thought I would be canceled for being a brown Republican voter.” Despite being a citizen of the U.K., M.I.A. decided to publicly endorse President Donald Trump ahead of the 2024 election. It was a marked shift for the rapper, who openly criticized the Republican during his first term in office. Accounts of her outburst were first shared on Reddit, before fan-shot footage started circulating on TikTok and was then picked up by the music site Consequence of Sound. In a Monday post to his Instagram story, Cudi announced he had dropped the “Bad Girls” artist from his tour after she failed to follow his instructions to stay away from saying “anything offensive” onstage. “I already knew what time it was, and I was assured things were understood,” he explained. “After the last couple shows, I’ve been flooded with messages from fans that were upset by her rants.” “This, to me, is very disappointing, and I wont have someone on my tour making offensive remarks that upsets my fanbase,” the “Day ‘n’ Nite” rapper went on. “Thank you for understanding. Rager.” Not long after, M.I.A. addressed the fallout in an X post, writing, “Do not gas light my words. That is the work of satan.” “I wrote ‘Borders’ and ‘Illygal’ and ‘Paper Planes’ before you thought immigrant rights were cool. I’ve had thses battles by myself without the help of millions of fans backing me,” she went on in the typo-filled post. “I don’t need this virtue signal era to all of a sudden erase an entire life I’ve LED. Jesus was an immigrant and a rebel. I have no appolgy for the judgemental the wicked and the ignorent, for those are spirits that we must over come in our lives and in this world.” Before embracing Trump, M.I.A. dabbled in anti-vaccine conspiracies around the height of the COVID pandemic back in 2020. In 2024, she launched her Ohmni clothing line, which she claimed was designed to protect wearers’ “privacy, autonomy and rights over” their bodies and “data” by fending off 5G wireless signals. Finding the perfect niche to market the products to, she appeared on conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ “Infowars” to promote the line.
