You might be surprised what we think is #1...
I'm a Southern California-based writer on the Lifestyle team who likes to try and rank viral foods and read and recommend awesome books.
(Literally, we were in the very last row at the very top of the arena, but we were just happy to be there.)
And just because I feel like I have to say this, my sisters and I subjectively agree that Olivia doesn't have one bad song in her discography. So, just because a song is ranked low, it doesn't mean it's automatically a bad or awful song! Everyone has different tastes and has songs by Olivia that mean a lot to them for different reasons, so please take this list with a grain of salt. 💜
One of the songs off the deluxe version of GUTS, "girl i've always been" is not as memorable as Olivia's other songs, nor is the melody anything that stays in your brain, in our opinion. BUT! Not to say there aren't any great moments in the song — we love how it's a bit more upbeat paired with the devastating theme of the lyrics.
It’s an interesting concept, it’s fun, edgy, and we love the stylistic choices Olivia makes while singing it. Honestly, the song is just not our cup of tea and doesn't get played as often as her other songs!
We consider "brutal" as Olivia’s first major dip into the female rage of it all — expressing teenage angst and anger, and what it’s like to grow up as a teen, not just under the spotlight, but in an ever-changing world where you're seen and accessible more than ever. However, with everything going on in the song, we have to be in a certain mood to listen to it. But, as Olivia says in the beginning: “I want it to be, like, messy." So, makes sense.
Not gonna lie, this song was a grower for my sisters and me. It was a very unexpected sound as a single for GUTS, as I didn’t think she was going to lean so heavily into the pop punk sound. But alas! It’s a fun song with a fun story; it tends to get in your head, but it is a bit repetitive. We had SO MUCH fun hearing it live though! Also, the pre-chorus is my favorite thing about the song.
This was a great third single to follow up "drivers license" and "deja vu." It showed that she has musical range and isn’t afraid to roam outside of the typical "pop girly" box — all while feeling super authentic to Olivia. We think it’s ranked so low just because we’ve heard it so many times, so it’s a little hard to properly rank it without having a listening bias. It’s a great song, but I don’t find myself willingly putting it on often.
Our favorite part of this song is the instrumental and the bridge. The message is incredibly relatable, honest, and vulnerable, as it’s something most people have gone through, especially when they're younger. Don’t get us wrong, we love this song, but we just think there are better ones!
We love the beat, and it’s not lost on us that this is her first happy love song (IYKYK). It’s very cute and refreshing in a sea of all of her great angsty, sadder, and slower songs. I love how Olivia is able to encapsulate her infatuation so creatively and genuinely.
The production is our favorite part of the song, and we think that it carries the song. It’s actually lowkey an underrated song of hers, and I like how she’s able to capture how cringe having a crush and being in love can be. Plus, the dance she does with it live is so fun and cute!
OK, we included this one song from the TV show since she released it as a single as part of the show's soundtrack album. But this song is so iconic anyway that we just had to. This song is so nostalgic and still holds up to this day, and it's cool to see how her songwriting has evolved since. Danielle is an OG Olivia stan and watched High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, so she's loved this song for a LONG time.
This song makes my sister emotional. It’s also lowkey underrated! The entire message is somber, wistful, and devastating. It’s a perfect way to end SOUR, and the bridge is a work of art.
Among the songs on GUTS, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that "ballad of a homeschooled girl" is the song I think about the least. But when it does occasionally come on, it’s definitely not a skip. The lyrics are clever, and it’s an interesting POV of someone who's been homeschooled and dealing with the feeling of not fitting in "properly" and missing typical high school moments and events.
This song is very relatable and has great lyrics that really speak to the beauty expectations placed on women, plus the insecurities that people may feel from trying to mold themselves into a beauty standard in a society that continuously moves the goalpost. I love how she explores the feelings of what happens when you buy into all the trending things and beauty hacks, but still don't feel like it's enough.
There’s lore to this song that you can look up (so my sister tells me), but this is another great album closer that really wraps up her teenage years, as she talks about being 19 and being unsure of her future while trying to live up to expectations. It's a super reflective conversation that she has with herself throughout the song, paired with a gorgeous piano and awesome layered harmonies.
If you didn’t know, this song uses an interpolation of Taylor Swift’s "New Year’s Day"! I like how Olivia takes this common phrase and builds a haunting narrative around it to anchor the ups and downs of a relationship.
The second this song came out, there was no question: we loved this song and loved the video even more. In fact, we learned the lyrics right then and there. 😭 It’s another happy and cute song that captures the giddy feeling of a first date, having a crush, and hoping for something more. It’s so catchy, so fun, and we love it when she switches up the verse! The bridge isn’t anything profound, but we’ve all been there, checking if your sign and your crush’s sign are compatible!
Hear us out: this is a great song with great lyrics about taking accountability and reflecting on your choices — and again, we love how she takes a common phrase, expands on it, and uses it to tell her story. Admittedly, though, it was more of a grower of a song.
I love the lyrics; they're so vulnerable and honest, and they really show the lengths a person will go to get the person they like to like them, even if it means changing themselves or not being authentic. It’s a stripped-down song that showcases Olivia’s depth and emotions in a simple yet effective way.
Fun fact: this is her longest song! This is an underrated banger on the deluxe version of GUTS. It’s another ballad, but this one is more of a reflection of her being honest with herself about how she truly feels, and you can hear the tension in the song. It's candid and self-aware, and grapples with the conflict of settling with someone or leaving them, with the risk of not finding anyone better.
This song is very tongue-in-cheek and fun! It makes us want to dance, and the double entendre of "getting him back" is so clever and witty. The bridge is debatably the best part of the song, especially if you know the TikTok dance (like we do). It was so fun seeing this live, and the reason why our favorite lyric is what it is is because Olivia's dad is a therapist! She ate with the "But I am my father's daughter, so maybe I could fix him" line SO bad.
This is unique in Olivia’s discography because it’s a bit more folky, and we love that! There’s nothing we necessarily didn’t like about the song, but it’s just a bit "simpler" in comparison to the songs ahead of this list, production-wise. However, we love that her vocals and the guitar are at the forefront of the song, and I personally always love it when an artist takes on the concept of a person you once knew so well, suddenly becoming a stranger.
This was an INSTANT banger in our household. The progression of the song is great because it starts slow, builds, peaks at the bridge, and showcases Olivia's vocal range so well. It’s a superior scream-in-the-car song — especially if you're going through a break-up or falling out. This song will always be famous in our book.
This was the perfect Hunger Games song. The lyrics are amazing, and the vocals are haunting, beautiful, and melodic. The harmonies are mesmerizing, and the picture it paints is so vivid and encapsulates the movie franchise so well. (I include the entire franchise because Lucy Gray has haunted Snow ever since. IYKYK.) Olivia was the PERFECT person to go to for a song, in our humble opinion.
OK, this is the point where the rest of the songs became VERY HARD to rank. But we're comfortable where "lacy" is placed. Fun fact that Danielle wants everyone to know: this song started as a poem, which is no surprise given the lyrics' poetic flow. This is the most haunting Olivia's vocals have sounded in a song thus far, and she sings it in a way that is so lamenting and emotional. She embodies the song completely, and I also just have an affinity for songs named after people. They’re almost always very good ("Valerie," "Rhiannon," "Jolene," etc.)
This song had us shook when we first heard it because we didn’t know where it was going to go! This song had Olivia in her female rage era bag. This was the perfect opener for GUTS, and it's like the older sister of "brutal." The screaming in it is iconic, and it was so incredible hearing this song live!
If you ever want a song to sing at the top of your lungs after experiencing some form of heartbreak, this is the one. It tells a vulnerable story and is a mix of an emotional confrontation, confession, and anger that demands accountability. Honestly, there's just nothing that feels generic or "general" about any of Olivia's music. Every song sounds like a lived experience and a piece of her, and she conveys it so well through music. This song — among countless others — is a prime example.
We literally could not decide the ranking between "happier" and "traitor," so just know that these are a hair's width apart. With this song, though, we love how the melody ebbs and flows, and how it tells the story of watching someone you used to love move on. You're not wishing on their downfall, but you also selfishly don't want them to feel happier than they were with you. Just so, so good — and wholly epitomizes why the album is called SOUR.
This might surprise you, but this song was ranked lower and gradually rose up the list the more we listened to it again (and again) and were reminded how good it is. Not gonna lie, I have a special connection to this song because the first time I heard it, I was going through a post-break-up situation, and the bridge may or may not have made me teary-eyed. Also, this song became an Inland Empire/local meme for a while since Olivia grew up in Temecula, so people were joking about which street she was driving on LOL. Anywho, the lyrics, the production, the vocals, and everything else in between are just too iconic and good not to take up a top-five spot.
CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE STORYTELLING?! Please, in my opinion, this is Olivia's most thematically cohesive song. The entire song is like her testifying about how this person ruined her, threw her under the bus, and ultimately betrayed her. It's a gorgeous song that still blows me away whenever it comes on, and the bridge leading up to the final chorus is nothing short of powerful.
Ugh, this song is just SO good. I honestly think that all of her songs are subjectively good, but this one just hits you in the feels more than usual. Maybe it's because she is crying out these lyrics. It's like you can feel the weight of every word she's singing — and these lyrics?! Please. The bridge alone is devastating, raw, and emotional, and Olivia is just so in her ballad bag here.
Speaking of being in her ballad bag, the runner-up for what we think Olivia's best song is so far in her career is, yes, "the grudge." Honestly, I knew from the beginning that this was going to be at least in the top three. This song is just so...sad and haunting and melancholic. The piano, the bridge, and how she sings it just gives me chills. That first line: "I have nightmares each week about that Friday in May," sets the tone for the rest of the song so well, and I'm always just left speechless whenever I hear it. The song leaves me feeling so heavy because I remember having those feelings all too well. So, so good.
Some people may be surprised, some people may be confused, some people may be shocked, but "deja vu" has always been number one in our hearts and souls. Listen, we know it's not the most lyrically profound, nor is the message anything super deep or whatever, but this song is just such a BANGER. It embodies the feelings of a nostalgic summer; the production is so dreamy, everything in the song is so intentional, applying deja vu to a situation where you're seeing an ex move on with someone new is so creative, and the bridge is the best thing to scream-sing. After "driver's license" dropped, I was curious to see how she would follow up on such a huge hit. But alas, our girl knows exactly what she's doing. It's truly a masterpiece of a song, and we MEAN IT!
