Ella Emhoff, the stepdaughter of former Vice President Kamala Harris and the daughter of former Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, cleared up her stance on SSRIs, saying she feels like her original video about the commonly prescribed antidepressants is being used for “right-wing propaganda.” “I am very pro-SSRIs,” Ella Emhoff said in an Instagram video posted Saturday. “I do not support the eradication of them at all. They have saved my life 100%. All I was trying to say in the video is that I didn’t know how hard it was to get off of them or the actual process of getting off of them, which there is a very healthy way to do it.” In Emhoff’s original video posted in December, which has now been deleted, she said she listened to a podcast about the “over-prescription” of SSRIs and expressed she didn’t feel like getting off them is “talked about enough.” “I feel like so many of us are on these meds and ... people get off of them and they kind of break down, and it can be really bad,” she said. The video was picked up by conservative outlets, like Evie Magazine and the New York Post, which wrote in the headline that she and other Gen Zers are starting to agree with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has been critical of SSRIs. Earlier this month, the Department of Health and Human Services announced it would try to curb the over-prescription of SSRIs. At a MAHA Institute summit on mental health and over-medicalization, Secretary of Health and Human Services RFK Jr. said America has a dependency issue because of “over-medicalization,” and “too many” people begin SSRIs without knowing the risks. He also repeated his claim that SSRIs are more addictive than heroine, which doctors have debunked. Both doctors and patients have been critical of Kennedy’s skepticism toward SSRIs. Emhoff has said she’s been on SSRIs for 10 years and has no plan to get off them. After Harris lost the presidency to Donald Trump in 2014, Emhoff addressed a rumor that she had a mental breakdown, saying it wasn’t true, but adding, “I’ve struggled with my mental health my whole life and I’m not ashamed of it.” By entering your email and clicking Sign Up, you're agreeing to let us send you customized marketing messages about us and our advertising partners.
