President Donald Trump experienced a more-than-awkward moment while presenting the Congressional Medal of Honor to several service members on Thursday, prompting a rabid response from critics on social media.

During the ceremony, Trump was presenting U.S. Army Major Nicholas Dockery with the military’s highest honor when he somewhat bizarrely patted the major on the back before draping the medal around his neck.

Trump then began fiddling with the band’s clasp, struggling to secure it for nearly a minute. He then tied the medal tightly in a crude knot, eliciting jeers from those in attendance.

Trump also appeared to say something to Dockery with the crowd laughing, but it cannot be heard clearly in video recordings.

Before presenting the medals, Trump quipped that he wanted to give himself the medal.

“But only a few have received our highest military distinction, the Congressional Medal of Honor. I wanted to give it to myself,” Trump said. “But I was informed I couldn’t do it. And I couldn’t find anything where I was actually worthy. So here we are.”

Critics on social media were quick to scoff not only at the amount of time it took the president to drape the medal around Dockery’s neck, but also his technique.
